With its beautiful sandy beaches, secret coves famous landmarks and spectacular views across to the majestic Arran hills and memories of cycles around the island, boating and other holiday activities then it has long been a favourite for trips and holidays. Here we take a truly fascinating journey back in time and around the island’s favourite attractions and ever popular destinations. We witness and sail aboard the once numerous graceful steamers that brought visitors to this magical island over the last 80 years including The Lucy Ashton, The Talisman, The Duchess of Fife, The Marchioness of Lorne, The Jupiter, Maid of Ashton, The Wee Cumbrae and of course The Keppel and many more as they race each other to the pier. It’s the 1930’s and we board the PS Duchess of Fife at Wemyss Bay for a sail to Millport packed with visitors all eager to explore the island’s delights or we catch the “Wee Fife” as she makes a call in the 1950’s at Keppel Pier as the graceful paddle steamer P.S. Marchioness of Lorne also arrives. Cycling around the island we relive visits to famous landmarks including Crocodile Rock, Lion Rock, Baby Lion, Indian Rock, Queen Victoria’s head and “The Wishing Well”. Anyone recall the days of the concerts on the beach led by the ”Seaside Mission”? Its 1950 and we join the P.S. Waverley at Largs with for a sail to Millport. 1953 sadly sees the retirement of the elegant steamer “The Duchess of Fife” after fifty years of faithful service and the introduction of the diesel electric steamer The Talisman. Towards the end of the 1965 summer season we catch a final view at Millport pier of the PS Talisman shortly before she is withdrawn from service. 1967 sees the introduction of M.V. Rose to the Largs Millport route this vessel was subsequently renamed M.V. Keppel . Ever changing requirements sees new slipways built in 1972 for both Cumbrae at the Old Tattie Pier and Largs in order to accommodate the former Skye car ferries of Caruisk II and Largs. I975 finds us aboard the P.S. Waverley at Largs in her first season with new owners and new colours amidst a busy Largs pier shared with The Kilbrannan, Keppel, Caruisk II and The Queen Mary. These are but just some of the highlights in this extremely rare, unique and intriguing look back at Millport’s rich and fascinating history. As the “Sleeping Warrior” lies in the dusky mist at the end of another hot summer day on this beautiful isle The Keppel slips away on her last call of the day. DVD Memories of Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsula 1898-1998
Memories of Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsula 1898-1998 Dunoon (fort of the harbour) is watched over on Castle Hill by Robert Burn’s statue of his Highland Mary and is the capital of Cowal situated on the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll and Bute. Steeped in clan and Scottish history and internationally famous for the Cowal Highland Games which it has proudly hosted for over a hundred years. This is a truly enthralling and fascinating detailed journey into the history of Dunoon and it’s many places around the cowal peninsula such as Kirn, Blairmore, Innellan, Sandbank and Ardentinny. Dunoon’s first pier built in 1835 by Mr Hunter ensured its growth and popularity initially as a Victorian holiday resort and destination for generations to come. For the last 150 years holidaymakers and visitors have arrived en mass by steamers from ports around the clyde including Cragendorran, Gourock and many others. Our journey includes fascinating and very rare scenes including those of the PS Marmion arriving into Dunoon in the 1930’s and the steamer St Columba berthed at Dunoon pier where visitors head straight for Castle Gardens , The Lido, Toward Castle the stronghold once of the Lamont Clan or other local attractions. Relive a sail from Dunoon aboard the beautiful and graceful PS Jeanie Deans calling at Innellan and Kirn along the way. 1938 sees Dunoon hosting the Clyde Sailing Fortnight with international yachts of all classes competing in all classes. We are treated to several fascinating visits to the Cowal Highland Games over the last sixty years sharing the finery and spectacle of the many pipe bands and competitive events including caber tossing, highland dancing and wrestling. In 1950 we are given the first colour footage of Argyll Street Dunoon with its summer celebrations in full swing. In 1953 the first diesel vessels the “four Maids” are commissioned The Maid of Argyll, Ashton, Skelmorlie and Cumbrae and joined in 1954 by the first Caledonian MacBrayne car ferries Bute, Cowal and Arran. Now struggling to compete we witness the steamer Queen Mary and the new PS Waverley making calls at Dunoon in the early 1960’s before we join the Duchess of Montrose for a scenic cruise up the Kyles of Bute to Inverary amidst breath-taking views and landscape as we call at Tigh na Bruich and around Ardlamont Point into Loch Fyne. We take one of the many bus tours in the 60’s from Dunoon “Round The Hill” passing Loch Eck, Whistlefield Inn, Ardentinny, Strone, Kilmun and many more. 1973 sees more changes as Caledonian MacBrayne takes ownership of PS Waverley, The Queen Mary and other steamers changing their colours in the process. Calmac continues to ring in the changes with two new car ferries the Juno and the Jupiter introduced between Gourock and Dunoon. As visitors leave Dunoon aboard the steamer after yet another wonderful Cowal Games we pass the many US Naval ships and base once based in Dunoon. 1973 sees the withdrawal of the PS Waverley where she is sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society for £1 and absent until 1975 when she re-emerges in her original LNER colours due to hard work and efforts of the preservation society. This is a unique and detailed rare account of Dunoon’s remarkable places and events over the last 150 years with rare glimpses and accounts of cherished places like Morag’s Fairy Glen or Ben More Gardens in and around this famous Clyde Resort.
