Lanark Lanimer week is one of Scotland’s oldest traditions is an ancient celebration within the Royal Burgh of Lanark which is held on the Thursday between 6th and 12th June each year since the year 1140. At one time all of the various Lanimer celebrations were within a single day but have gradually evolved during the 20th century to become a series of events spanning a week. Key events of Lanimer week include The Kirkin of the Cornet, The Perambulation of the Marches, The Lord Cornet;s Ball, Evening Ride Out by the Lord Cornet, Lanimer Day – Procession, The Crowing of the Queen, the Queen’s Reception and the Queen’s Reception at the Memorial hall. Lanimer Day itself is the highlight of the weeks celebration. Relive the exciting and nostalgic sights, scenes and faces of a decade of Lanark’s Lanimer Day celebrations starting in 1951. Recall the annual “Kirkin of the Cornet” and enjoy the abundance variety and creativity of the beautifully decorated floats in the procession whose fantastic designs include Cakes, Roman Forts, Ships, Tropical Islands, Popeye and many more as they entertain the thousands of townsfolk who line the streets on this important day of the year. With the Highland Pipe Bands, The Boys Brigade, Scouts and Girl Guides all involved it truly is a spectacle for all. Catch a glimpse of the town as it was in the 1950’s when its local businesses and shops included Greenlees & Sons, Thomas Rodgers, Carrs, David Archibald, Darroch & Sons Jewellers and Bairds of Edinburgh. Of course no Lanimer Day would be complete without the coronation of a new Lanimer Queen. We share the formalities, procession, traditions and crowning ceremony of the each new Lanimer Queen during successive years with the crown passing from Queen to Queen elected from the local schools of the time that then included The Secondary School, New Lanark School, Kirkfieldbank School, The Primary School and St Mary’s School. These golden memories of this precious ancient traditional celebrations are preserved here and truly revived for your enjoyment as we journey back in time to recall past Lanimer Day Celebrations from the last Century. Approximately 25 miles east of Inverness and sitting between the floodplain of the River Findhorn and the wooded slopes of Cluny and Sanquhar Hills, the town of Forres is well known for its award-winning floral sculptures and is steeped in local history and traditions. This is a truly beautiful and fascinating record of events, faces and places in and around the town of Forres during 1937-1938. In this rare archive we are invited to participate and share in many of the towns annual events during this period including “Forres Gala Week” and “Forres Garden Fete”. Arriving by steam train into Forres station we recall and relive the long list of events and activities of Gala week. We start things off with the procession through the town to Grant Park by the massed pipe bands, the Scouts and Guides Tattoo and the elaborately decorated floats and costumes. We follow and join the week-long celebration enjoying each days events that encompass the crowning of “The Gala Queen”, Sheep Dog Trials, Cricket, Tennis, cycling and athletics, Highland Dancing, Military displays, boxing and even a “Keep Fit” demonstration is on offer – all for the princely admission price of 3D. Another key event in the Forres calendar is the “Garden Fete” held on the 15th June at Sanqhar House where we recall these nostalgic Summer days of fun, stalls, pipe bands, rides, amusements and competitions including the “Bonny Baby Contest”, “Mother’s Neatest Ankles”. This is a rare intimate and nostalgic account of the people and life in Forres during this early part of the previous century. In 1901 Frank Hornby, a clerk from Liverpool, England, invented a new construction toy called "Mechanics Made Easy", which soon became known as Meccano.To manufacture and distribute Meccano, Hornby needed to raise capital to invest in factory and plant, and this resulted in the establishment of Meccano Ltd in 1908, with Hornby as the sole proprietor. A factory was acquired in West Derby Road in Liverpool and the company began producing Meccano sets for sale across the UK. Meccano Ltd was a British toy company established in 1908 by Frank Hornby in England to manufacture and distribute Meccano and other model toys and kits created by the company. During the 1920s and 1930s it became the biggest toy manufacturer in the United Kingdom and produced three of the most popular lines of toys in the twentieth century: Meccano, Hornby Trains and Dinky Toys. This is a fascinating and nostalgic history of Meccano Ltd of Binns Road Liverpool where we revisit and enjoy examples of the “Meccano Set”, “Hornby Trains” and “Dinky Toys” and “Supertoys”.
